The 23rd Annual Darley Awards, sponsored by the Arabian Racing Cup (ARC), were held Saturday, March 13, in Houston, Texas. The big winner of the evening was Sand Witchh (Burning Sand x *Tornade du Loup by Tornado de Syrah) who was named Horse of the Year as well as Three-Year-Old Filly of the Year. Sand Witchh, bred by Dianne Waldron, is owned by Guy Neivens. The other winners include: Three-Year-Old Colt of the Year Quite A Show (*Falina des Fabries x French Braids by *Virgule Al Maury), owned by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Four-Year-Old Colt of the Year and Sprinter of the Year Qjuick Sand PW (Burning Sand x Doya Juana Dance by Juan de Shawn), owned by Warren Shelley. Four-Year-Old Filly of the Year Dixies Valentine (*Nivour de Cardonne x Dixie Darlene by *Wiking), and Older Horse of the Year Thoroughbred (TC Tomtyr x *Vanessa du Loup by Manganate), both owned by Guy Neivens. Older Female of the Year Rolly Polly (*Falina des Fabries x SS Nellie Bly by *Negor), owned by Ken and Nancy Blewett. Owner of the Year, Guy Neivens; Trainer of the Year Helen Shelley, Jockey of the Year William Hollick and Breeder of the Year Dianne Waldron completed the awards. Ted Wright, chief steward of the ARC, announced a change in the voting procedure for 2010: Anyone who nominates a horse into the ARC program will be eligible to vote on selected Darley nominees for the current year, however, each person will get only one vote, regardless of how many horses that person nominates.
