Grilla Edges Out Sand Witchh to Win the 50,000 President of UAE Cup (Grade 1) at Keeneland

The 2006 grey colt Grilla (Kong x Dixie Darlene by *Wiking) beat the previously undefeated Sand Witchh (Burning Sand x *Tornade du Loup by Tornado de Syrah) at the $50,000 Abu Dhabi-sponsored Arabian Stakes race at Keeneland Racecourse Saturday, October 9. The race was the first Arabian Stakes race at Keeneland, and part of the President of the UAE Cup Series, which also hosted races in Ireland, France, the U.K., and Russia Grilla, owned and trained by Bill Waldron and ridden by Ricardo Chiappe, ran the 1 1/4 mile stake in 2:15.42. Grilla made his move in the final turn, putting pressure on Sand Witchh tight against the rail. Sand Witchh started the race with a perfect record of 9 for 9, while Grilla’s record before the race was 11 races and 6 wins. The order of finish: Jockey Calvin Borel, winner of the past two runnings of the Kentucky Derby (G1), on Mine That Bird in 2009 and Super Saver in 2010, rode the previously undefeated TM Super Bird (Burning Sand x Heaven Kan Wait by Virgule Al Maury).
